LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell volleyball and women's soccer teams will both look for victories over Lafayette this Friday evening as the volleyball squad will play host to the Leopards in Davis Gym while women's soccer will face the Leopards out on the Varsity Soccer field. Both events are slated for 7 p.m. starts.
The Bison volleyball team enters Friday's match with an 11-6 overall record on the year, 3-2 against Patriot League opponents. Bucknell will look to extend its winning streak after defeating Holy Cross and Lehigh in its last two times on the court. The Blue and Orange are 6-2 when competing in Davis Gym this season and have come away victorious in four out of their last five matches overall.
Sophomore Jenna Henderson (Elk Grove, Calif./Laguna Creek) leads Bucknell in kills per game with 3.03 and freshman Shannon Pitsch (Oak Brook, Ill./Fenwick) has a team-high 5.78 assists per game on the season. Senior Chelsea Anderson (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines) has a team-best with 4.16 digs per game and currently ranks 16th in the nation in aces per game with an average of 0.67. As a squad, Bucknell ranks 11th in Division I with 2.41 aces per game.
The Leopards enter Friday's match with a record of 10-7, 1-3 in the Patriot League. Lafayette has posted a 7-1 clip at home in 2005, but has recorded just one victory on the road for a 1-4 record. Veronica Canto-Ponce leads the Leopards with 3.34 kills per game, is averaging 0.69 aces per game and has 1.00 blocks per game. Michaela Donohue has a team-high of 3.85 digs per game and Megan Carter has a squad-best 9.98 assists per game.
Women's soccer will look to add another win to its already stellar record of 5-1-0 in matches on the new Varsity Soccer Field. The Bison come into Friday's competition, which will be broadcast live on WVBU FM 90.5 and www.sportsjuice.com, at 6-6-0 overall and 0-1-0 in Patriot League action. Bucknell recently matched a program record with five straight victories, but has fallen short in its last two matches, 2-0 against Colgate and 1-0 against Penn.
Junior forward Jennifer Margolis (Englishtown, N.J./Manalapan) currently leads the squad with nine goals and two assists for 20 points and has four of the team's six game-winning goals. She ranks first in the Patriot League in goals and game-winning goals and is second in points. Sophomore Krista Lee Gentile (Haledon, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) ranks second for Bucknell with 17 points on six goals and five assists through the team's 12 games. Junior Katie Dry (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) has played 706:29 minutes in net for the Bison on the year and has made 33 saves with a 1.91 goals against average.
The Leopards are 1-6-3 on the season with their last win coming on Sept. 4, when the team captured a 1-0 victory over St. Peter's. Since the victory, Lafayette has struggled offensively and has not scored a goal since winning that match. The Leopards have just four goals as a team on the season, with three of the four tallies recorded by Caroline Tuttle.
