WORCESTER, Mass. - Trailing 1-0 in the second half, the Bucknell women's soccer team used two quick goals to come from behind and defeat Holy Cross, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon. The victory moved the Bison into fourth place in the Patriot League with a 3-3-0 record in league play and improved the squad to 9-8-0 overall. The Crusaders fell to 3-14-0 on the season, 1-5-0 in the Patriot League following the loss.
The teams played a scoreless first half before Holy Cross was able to get on the board 61:16 into the contest. A pass from Kaitlin McTague set up Meredith Davis with a breakaway. Davis then finished off the play by putting the ball though the legs of Bucknell goalkeeper Katie Dry (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) and into the net.
At 82:05, the Bison began their swift two-goal rally. Junior Caitlyn Kuntz (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) tied the score with her first of the season on a shot from 30 yards out that found its way through a crowd and into the back of the Crusaders' goal.
Just over a minute later, Bucknell took a 2-1 lead after junior Jennifer Margolis (Englishtown, N.J./Manalapan) sent a feed to freshman Jennifer Dervarics (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) who one-timed it past Holy Cross netminder Jessica Pietrowicz for her fifth of the season.
The Bison held a 17-7 advantage in shots over the Crusaders in the match and led in corner kicks, 5-0. Dry made two saves in net for Bucknell while Pietrowicz stopped eight shots for Holy Cross. Fouls were 9-8 against the Crusaders.
Bucknell returns home on Friday, Oct. 28, to close out the 2005 regular season with a pivotal Patriot League match against Navy at 7 p.m. The Blue and Orange currently hold a one-point lead on American in the league standings and a victory in the match would ensure the Bison a spot in the Patriot League Tournament while a loss would knock Bucknell out of playoff contention.
