LEWISBURG, Pa. - A goal in the 71st minute by sophomore Kevin Holmes (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) helped the Bucknell men's soccer team earned a 1-1 tie against Saint Francis (Pa.) in a non-league matchup Wednesday night at Varsity Soccer Field.
The Red Flash actually got on the board first as the Bison came out of the gates a little sluggish. Saint Francis (5-4-2) capitalized at the 6:10 mark on a fluke goal. Zach Koontz attempted a shot from the edge of the box. Bucknell (6-5-3) goalkeeper Adam Edwards (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) was positioning himself to save it, but the ball glanced off the back of Andrew Stephens and into the goal for his second score of the year.
Neither team would score until Holmes, a sophomore in his first year of competition for Bucknell, evened the game at the 70:26 mark with his first career goal. Freshman Mark Schmiegel (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) crossed the ball from the left corner and Holmes jumped up and headed the ball into the back of the net. It was Schmiegel's team-high second assist this year.
Neither team scored the rest of the way as Bucknell recorded its first tie since a 1-1 contest against NJIT Sept. 21.
Saint Francis gave the Bison a scare with just over seven minutes to play. Donnie Montoya was between two Bucknell defenders trying to chase a loose ball down. Joey Kuterbach (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood), who relieved Edwards in goal at the beginning of the second half for Bucknell, converged on the ball at the same time. Montoya kicked it just out of the reach of Kuterbach, and chased it down. With Kuterbach out of the picture, Montoya only had to worry about a pair of Bison defenders, however, his shot bounced off the crossbar.
Bucknell, which outshot Saint Francis 12-8 overall, and 4-3 in the overtime periods, had a pair of chances at winning the game in overtime. In the first 10-minute overtime period, Justin Wolf (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) launched a shot from the top of the box that Red Flash goalkeeper Boby Pipech easily saved. With six minutes left in the second overtime frame, Scott Visnic (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) fired a shot from 15 yards out that Pipech made an easy diving save of.
Pipech finished the contest with five saves, while Kuterbach tallied just one in his relief effort. Kuterbach did extend his personal scoreless streak to 325 minutes, 11 seconds with 65 minutes of shutout play. He has not allowed a goal in 145 minutes of action this season, and ended the 2004 campaign without allowing a goal in 180:11.
The Bison, who still have two games remaining on their four-game homestand, return to Patriot League play Saturday night when they host first-place Lehigh at 7 p.m. at Varsity Soccer Field. The Mountain Hawks eliminated Bucknell from last year's Patriot League Tournament with a 6-5 shootout victory, after a scoreless game.
