LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior goalkeeper Adam Edwards (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) recorded his 25th career shutout to break the Bucknell record as the Bison men's soccer team defeated Lafayette 1-0 in a Patriot League match at Varsity Soccer Field Saturday night.
Edwards, who made two saves to boost his Patriot League-leading save total to 56, surpassed Ted Peterson's 30-year-old shutout record by not allowing the Leopards a goal. The shutout was Edwards' seventh this season as he lowered his goals-against average to 0.88. He is just one shutout shy of tying Lehigh's Ryan Grzeszczak for the Patriot League career standard in shutouts.
The lone goal of the game came unexpectedly in the first half off the foot of Eric Brunton (Carmel, Ind./Carmel). Justin Wolf (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) passed the ball to Kevin Holmes (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock), who was stationed on the left edge of the box. Holmes quickly relayed the ball to Brunton, who was stationed in front of the goal, and promptly skipped it past Lafayette goalkeeper Mike Tortora. It was the team-high third goal of the year for Brunton, and it marked the second consecutive game he has scored a goal.
Tortora matched Edwards by making two saves in the contest.
Lafayette (7-4-0, 1-2-0 Patriot League), which played a physical game and was whistled for 18 fouls compared to 10 for Bucknell (6-5-2, 2-2-0 PL), played a strong game offensively despite not scoring a goal as it outshot the Bison 11-7 and won the corner kick battle 5-3.
The win ended a three-game losing streak for Bucknell, and halted a three-game winning streak for Lafayette. The Bison, who have won three consecutive home matches, improved to 3-1-1 on their home pitch. They have allowed just one goal in five home games this season.
Saturday's game was the first of a four-game homestand for Bucknell. The Bison will continue that stretch of home games against Saint Francis (Pa.) Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m.
