PRINCETON, N.J. - The Bucknell men's water polo team fell short in its bid to upset No. 12 Princeton for the second time in nine days as the Tigers defeated the Bison 8-4 Tuesday night at DeNunzio Pool.
Bucknell, which is ranked 18th in the country, defeated the nationally ranked Tigers last Sunday in a thrilling 12-11 overtime game at Kinney Natatorium. The win snapped a 17-game losing streak to Princeton, which saw its streak of 14 consecutive league wins snapped with the loss.
The Bison fell behind 2-0 early in the first quarter and it appeared as though another upset would be tough to attain, but Bucknell responded with two goals to tie the game before Princeton took a 3-2 lead after seven minutes of play.
The two teams played even over the next two periods as they traded goals, but the Tigers reeled off three unanswered goals in the fourth quarter for the hard-fought victory.
Jason Rechel (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington), who is second on the Bison with 25 goals, led the way with a pair of scores. Mark Masterson (Kihei, Hawaii/Marin) and Kyle Roslyn (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) added one goal apiece to round out the scoring for Bucknell. The Bison scored three of their four goals in six-on-five opportunities, but were just 3-for-7 overall.
Bucknell goalkeeper Trevor Mullins (Orinda, Calif./Palo Alto) made four saves to key a defense that registered six steals in front of him.
Entering the contest Bucknell and Princeton were tied for the lead in the CWPA Southern Division, East Region Standings with matching 4-1 marks. Overall, the Bison fell to 8-13, while the Tigers, who upset No. 9 Loyola Marymount last weekend, improved to 13-6 overall.
Bucknell continues league play this coming weekend, the final weekend of regular-season competition. The Bison will play Navy, Salem International, Johns Hopkins and George Washington. They open play Friday, Oct. 14, against Navy at 8 p.m. in Annapolis.
