Bucknell Women's Rowing Opens Fall Season with Successful Home Race

SHAMOKIN DAM, Pa. - The Bucknell women's rowing team opened its 2005 fall season Saturday morning as it rowed against Patriot League rival Lehigh and Fordham on the Susquehanna River. The Bison's top boat took third place overall, while a total of four Bucknell boats competed in the 6,000-meter race.
The top boat from Bucknell, which completed the course in 23 minutes, 21 seconds, finished 53 seconds behind the overall winner from Fordham. Lehigh's top boat took second place in 23:05. Coxswain-Jeweliet Yost, 8-Ariel Farrar-Wellman, 7-Sophie Bird, 6-Kate Brewster-Duffy, 5-Amanda Gallina, 4-Lindsey Harriss, 3-Anna Boero, 2-Abigail Neff and 1-Jenna Kotyk were members of the Bison boat that placed third overall.
Three other Bucknell boats competed in the race and finished sixth, eighth and 10th in the 10-boat field.
The second Bison boat to finish, which consisted of coxswain-Coral Swartz, 8-Caitlin Doolin, 7-Cara Levy, 6-Brittany Kaplan, 5-Jennie Trayes, 4-Sarah Wohlman, 3-Whitney Henry, 2-Jessica Glenn and 1-Erin Henry, crossed the finish line in 24:39.
The final two Bucknell boats finished less than a minute apart as the first one timed in at 26:08 and the final one in 26:48, just six seconds behind ninth-place Lehigh.
The eighth-place Bison boat was made up of coxswain-Lauren Ruddy, 8-Drew Paolucci, 7-Christine Drasba, 6-Lauren Comegys, 5-Page Kannor, 4-Gillian Young, 3-Amy Van Nostrand, 2-Christa Budney and 1-Katherine London.
The final Bucknell boat, the one that was nipped by the Mountain Hawks for ninth place, contained coxswain-Anna Latimer, 8-Colleen McKeown, 7-Jayne Kubat, 6-Renee Perry, 5-Cara Cox-Steiner, 4-Julia Martin, 3-Megan Talbot, 2-Lauren Bolcar and 1-Courtney Luzzi.
"I was very pleased with the overall effort I saw out on the river today," said Bucknell head coach Stephen Kish. "Everyone did a great job giving a long and steady push all the way through the finish line."
Saturday's race was just the first of the fall season, which serves as a tune-up for the spring championship campaign. The Bison have two events remaining on their fall schedule with the next being the Head of the Schuylkill Oct. 29 in Philadelphia, Pa. The following weekend Bucknell will compete at the Head of the Occoquan in Fairfax, Va.
