LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell junior guard Kevin Bettencourt (Peabody, Mass./Peabody) has been named the Lewisburg Hotel Bison Athlete of the Week after scoring a season-high 27 points, including the 1,000th point of his career, on Sunday afternoon at Navy.
Despite a disappointing 0-2 weekend at American and Navy, Bettencourt still became the 30th Bison to join the 1,000-point club. He has now pocketed 1,020 career points and stands in a tie for 27th place with Mark Allsteadt (1984-87) on Bucknell's all-time list. He needs just seven points to catch Sekou Hamer (1992-96) and nine to reach Mark Atkinson (1984-87).
Bettencourt hit a season-high six 3-pointers against Navy and produced the fourth-highest scoring game of his career. He also went 5-for-5 from the free-throw line against the Midshipmen and is now 69-for-75 (.920) on the season. Last week Bettencourt ranked fifth nationally in free-throw percentage.
For the year Bettencourt is averaging a team-best 13.4 points per game. He ranks fourth in the Patriot League in scoring, first in free-throw percentage, seventh in steals (32) and second in 3-pointers made (44).
Also over the weekend Bettencourt moved into third place on Bucknell's career 3-point field goal list with 181, one more than J.R. Holden (1994-98). Bettencourt needs two treys to catch Mike Joseph (1986-90) for second place and is 25 shy of Mike Bright's school record, set between 1989-93.
The Bison saw their 11-game winning streak come to an end on Friday at American. The streak had equaled the longest at Bucknell since 1919 and was the fifth-longest active streak in the nation. Now 14-6 overall and 5-2 in the Patriot League, the Bison next travel to Lafayette on Friday night at 7 p.m.
