Bison Track and Field Records Four First Place Finishes at Bison Open

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell track and field squads finished up a busy weekend of competition on Saturday with athletes competing at both the Penn State National Invitational in State College, Pa., and the Bison Open at Gerhard Fieldhouse. In total, the Bison wound up with three individual gold medals and one relay victory.
In Lewisburg, the Bison women got individual wins from Marjorie Grap in the 20-pound weight throw and Sarah VandenBroek in the 200-meters. Grap record a toss of 54'1" in the weight while VandenBroek clocked a time of 26.09 to take the 200. The team of Cindy Darius, Laura Nagy, VandenBroek and Rehana Lanewala won the 4x400 relay in 4:07.18.
Grap, Angie McFarland and Jen O'Connor added second place finishes with Grap taking the silver in the shot put (43'10 ¾"), McFarland earning running up honors in the weight (52'8 ¼") and O'Connor coming in second in the 3000 (10:45.42). O'Connor also claimed fourth place in the mile with a time of 5:15.19. Vicki Gilbert picked up third place honors clocking 2:22.48 in the 800.
At Penn State, Amy Calvo finished sixth in the 500 running 1:15.06, just .05 seconds off her school record time. Monique Boley was also strong in the 500 taking 10th place in 1:15.56. Both times meet the ECAC qualifying mark. Also on the track, Lauren Bricker came away with an eighth place showing in the 800 clocking 2:16.48. In the field, Ann Doty managed a 12th place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 37'6 ½".
Back at Bucknell, Mark Caroleo was a winner in the 1000 running 2:35.07, while Faizal Asumda and Koran Evans went two-three in the 500 with times of 1:07.76 and 1:07.84, respectively. Mike Mellas finished in fourth place in the heptathlon with a total of 4309 points. Wallace Campbell also pulled in a fourth place finish clocking 8:52.84 in the 3000.
Mike Contino took eighth place in the long jump recording a jump of 21'8 ¾". Doug Creveling also recorded a top ten finish taking ninth in the 3000 in 9:01.21. Nick DeGregorio placed 10th in the 35-pound weight throw with a mark of 45'3".
The Bison are on the road next weekend at the Kent State Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 5. The teams will return home the following weekend for the Bucknell Winter Classic at Gerhard Fieldhouse on Feb. 12.
