LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell junior co-captain Kevin Bettencourt (Peabody, Mass./Peabody) was named the Patriot League Men's Basketball Player of the Week on Monday after helping the Bison to a 59-43 victory over Holy Cross over the weekend.
Bettencourt was also tabbed as the Lewisburg Hotel Bison Athlete of the Week.
In a battle of the league's top two teams heading into the opening day of conference play, Bucknell won a hard-fought defensive struggle to extend its winning streak to seven games. The Bison, who were coming off head-turning road wins over St. Joseph's and then-seventh-ranked Pittsburgh, are now 10-4 on the season.
Bettencourt has had a significant role in Bucknell's historic start to the season. In the Holy Cross win on Saturday he scored a game-high 17 points, making 3 of 5 from 3-point range and all eight free-throw attempts. He also contributed to a suffocating defensive effort with a career-high six steals.
On the season Bettencourt leads the Bison and ranks fourth in the Patriot League in scoring at 13.9 points per game. He also ranks among the national leaders in free-throw percentage at 94.3% (50-53) and is second in the Patriot League in 3-pointers made (32) and eighth in steals (22).
Bettencourt is averaging 18.0 ppg over his last four games and has made at least two 3-pointers in 10 of 14 games this season.
Bucknell looks to extend its winning streak to eight on Wednesday night at Colgate. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
