VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Bucknell women's soccer team fell by a 3-0 score to No. 22 Villanova Sunday afternoon at the Villanova Soccer Complex. The Bison have now dropped two consecutive contests to Big East foes as they fell to 1-2-0 on the season. The Wildcats, authors of three straight shutouts, stand at 4-0-0.
After holding the potent Villanova offense scoreless for the first 37 minutes, Bucknell allowed the first goal of the game in the 38th minute when Nikki Mabery tallied the first of her two scores. After holding the Wildcats scoreless the remainder of the half, the Bison trailed just 1-0 at intermission.
However, Mabery found the back of the net again just three minutes into the second stanza to give Villanova a 2-0 lead. Megan Farmer, who assisted on Mabery's second goal, then tacked on the Wildcats' final goal of the day in the 66th minute.
Sophomore Katie Dry started her third consecutive game in goal for Bucknell and made a career-high eight saves as she played all 90 minutes. The Rochester, N.Y., native faced 19 shots, 11 on goal, in the contest. The Bison were able to attempt just two shots as Villanova's starting goalie, Jillian Loyden, needed to make just one save.
"Villanova is a very deep and fast team," said Bucknell head coach Chrissy Findlay. "We have to play talented teams like them to prepare ourselves for the Patriot League season. Our defense worked hard in closing up their passing lanes and that worked as we limited them to just one goal in the first half."
The Bison return home for a match with St. Francis (Pa.) on Wednesday, Sept. 8. The contest is scheduled to kick off at 4 p.m. at West Fields.
