ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Senior Jay Danforth scored twice in the Bucknell men's water polo team's final game at the Navy Open, but it was not enough as the Bison fell to No. 4 California 18-4 Sunday afternoon. Bucknell, which came up short against No. 6 Long Beach State Saturday, concluded the two-day season-opening Navy Open with a 1-2 record.
Despite tallying one goal in each period, Bucknell could not stop the powerful California offense, which included Kevin Platshon, the brother of Bison senior co-captain Aaron Platshon, as the Bears tallied at least four goals in every period, including five in both the second and third quarters. California's tally was the most Bucknell's defense had given up since Queens defeated the Bison 18-8 at the 2002 Eastern Championships.
Joining Danforth in the scoring column for Bucknell were senior co-captain Elliot Benoist and junior Bradley Roslyn. Benoist recorded one goal and a pair of assists. Roslyn upped his season total to a team-high six goals with one score Sunday.
Junior Trevor Mullins played the whole game in goal and made a season-high six saves.
Earlier in the day, the Bison defeated the Northeast Zone team by a 12-5 score in an exhibition game.
Bucknell (1-2) will be return to the pool Friday evening for the first day of the three-day Bucknell Invitational. The Bison are slated to host Salem International at 8 p.m. in Kinney Natatorium.
