ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Rebounding from a loss earlier in the day, the Bucknell men's water polo team posted a 16-3 victory over Fordham Sunday afternoon to wrap up its first day of competition at the Navy Open. Senior Elliot Benoist and junior Sean Robinson led the way with three goals apiece as the Bison posted their most goals since a 16-7 victory over Washington & Jefferson in 2000.
Benoist and Robinson paced the Bucknell offense that raced out to a 7-1 halftime lead behind five second quarter goals. The Bison matched that feat in the third period before adding four more tallies in the fourth quarter. The Rams could muster just one goal in each of the remaining quarters after going scoreless in the first stanza.
Joining Benoist, who also tallied three assists, and Robinson in the scoring column with two goals each were seniors Nick Ferring and Jay Danforth, along with junior Bradley Roslyn. Senior Aaron Platshon and freshmen Jared Gray, Jason Rechel and Joseph Metcalf each found the back of the net once.
Junior Trevor Mullins and freshman Lucas Belenky, who was making his first career appearance for Bucknell, split time in goal. Mullins played the first half and made one save while allowing one goal. Belenky relieved the veteran and stopped three shots against just two goals allowed.
Earlier in the day, the Bison opened the two-day Navy Open with a 10-4 loss to Long Beach State.
Bucknell (1-1) will be return to the pool Sunday afternoon for a game with Cal at 2:15 p.m. That contest will conclude the Navy Open for the Bison.
