BRONX, N.Y. - The Bucknell men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Iona Meet of Champions in Bronx, N.Y. on Saturday. Senior Dan Lounsbury was the top finisher on the men's side while sophomore Jenny Stevens was the first to finish for the women.
Lounsbury placed 32nd in a field of 187 competitors in a time of 26:08.0 over the five-mile course. Stevens finished the six-kilometer race in 52nd place with a time of 23:18.8.
After Lounsbury, the men had a tight pack to finish out the scoring for the Bison. Freshman Andrew Corral (26:35.2) ran as Bucknell's second runner and finished 52nd followed by Travis Rivers (26:39.3) and Doug Creveling (26:40.1) in 56th and 57th places, respectively. Chris Nocera (26:43.8) rounded out the Bison scoring in 61st position. Michael Gibney (71st, 26:52.1) and Matt Forys (76th, 26:56.1) were the final two runners in the Bison top seven.
"The men had a nice pack after Lounsbury," said Bucknell head coach Kevin Donner. "To be competitive they need to be about 20 seconds faster, but I'm confident the pack will move up."
On the women's side, Leanna Nastase (23:35.6) and Julie Jakoboski (23:36.6) followed Stevens in 59th and 60th places as Bucknell's second and third runners. Lauren Bricker (23:42.6) and Jen Marsh (23:44.5) also scored for the Bison finishing close behind in 63rd and 65th positions. Freshman Erin Cranmer-Hart placed 70th in 23:58.7 and Kerryann Branker finished 72nd in 24:01.2 to complete the Bison top seven.
"The women's race was a national caliber meet," said Donner. "Our times were faster than last year and the experience will pay off later in the season."
The men scored a total 208 points to finish seventh in the team standings. Bucknell's total score of 232 earned the women an eighth place finish in the team scoring. Iona College won the team championship on the men's side with 35 points while Wake Forest was the winner in the women's race with 50 points.
Next up for both squads is the Gulden Invitational in Lewisburg on Friday, Oct. 1, beginning at 5 p.m.
