ITHACA, N.Y. - An early goal from freshman Krista Lee Gentile held up as the Bucknell women's soccer team shut out Cornell, 1-0, Wednesday evening at Berman Field. The Bison evened their record at 4-4-0 and handed the Big Red its first loss of the season as it dropped to 3-1-2 this year.
Gentile netted the only goal of the game just 5:40 into the first half. Senior Meghann Chipko took a corner kick which junior Meaghan Ferris attempted to head into the goal, but it bounced off the crossbar. Gentile collected the carom and fired in her second goal of the season.
The win was the first for Bucknell in 12 all-time meetings versus Cornell, which holds a 10-1-1 advantage in the series. The victory also marked just the third time the Bison have defeated an Ivy League team. Their last triumph over an Ivy League opponent was a 4-1 thrashing of Penn in 1994.
Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Dry went the distance in goal for Bucknell and made four saves as Cornell outshot the Bison by an 11-4 margin, including 6-1 after halftime.
"We needed a big win heading into the Lafayette game Saturday," said Bucknell head coach Chrissy Findlay. "We have been working on trying to score early and we were able to accomplish that tonight."
The Bison return home for the first time since August when they host Lafayette at 1 p.m. Saturday at West Fields. The match will be broadcast on 1380-AM WMLP in the Lewisburg area and can be heard over the internet free of charge at www.SportsJuice.com.
