Bucknell Women's Tennis Finishes Up Weekend of Tournament Play

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Bucknell women's tennis team finished up three days of tournament action at the Eastern Collegiate Invitational hosted by Army on Sunday. The duo of Veronica Brown and Nada Curcic had the most success for the Bison by reaching the semifinals of the doubles portion of the tournament.
Brown and Curcic picked up two victories on the weekend before bowing out to the tandem of Marissa Umsiaco and Megan Noble of Army, 9-8, 7-4 in the tiebreaker. Umsiaco and Noble were the top-seeded team in the tourney.
After receiving a first-round bye, Brown and Curcic defeated Jillian Schalk and Adriana Segura of Hofstra, 8-1, in second-round action. In the quarterfinals, the Bison duo notched another victory over Mara Frisch and Anne Watkins of George Washington, 8-3.
Freshman Danielle Shtemberg also picked up a win for the Bison defeating Leah Woodward of George Washington, 6-0, 6-1, in early-round action on Friday. Shtemberg then lost in the quarterfinal round to Barbora Blahutiakova of St. John's, 7-5, 6-3.
The team of Caitlyn Baffa and Kelly Porter also recorded a win on Friday defeating Katie Shaw and Paige Welch of Niagara, 8-3. Baffa and Porter ended their tournament run on Saturday falling 8-4 to Christine Bicksler and Pam Chavez of Army.
Chelsea Mills also notched a win in the consolation round on Friday. Mills defeated Aimee Kern of Albany, 8-5, before losing to Kristina Bothova of St. Johns, 8-0, on Saturday.
The Bison head to the Quinnipiac Invitational next weekend in West Hamden, Conn. Competition will begin on Friday, Sept. 24, and conclude on Sunday, Sept. 26.
