LEWISBURG, Pa. - Sophomore Jon Britton sneaked a goal past Adam Edwards in the 97th minute to give James Madison a 2-1 overtime victory over Bucknell in the home opener for the Bison Sunday afternoon at West Fields. The Bison fell to 0-4-1, while the Dukes remained undefeated at 6-0-0.
Britton took a header pass from Mark Totten on the doorstep of the goal and sneaked it past Edwards 6:51 into the first overtime period to end the game, Bucknell's second overtime contest of the season.
Despite not scoring a goal in overtime, the Bison had a prime scoring chance just 1:10 into the period. Junior Scott Visnic attempted a shot from about 18 yards which rolled just to the right of the goalpost, nearly giving Bucknell its first win of the season.
The Dukes opened the scoring in the first half when Bobby Humphrey scored on a penalty kick in the 25th minute. He was on a breakaway and was pulled down from behind by Tim Faneck, which led to the penalty shot.
The Bison answered that goal early in the second half. Junior Eric Brunton controlled the ball on the left side of the field and passed it across to Visnic who hammered the ball into the right side of the net for his second goal of the season. The two teams then played the final 39:23 of regulation without scoring, although Brunton had a chance in the 60th minute, but missed a header attempt off the crossbar.
In the final 20 minutes, senior co-captain Michael Lookingland came up big on the defensive end. The Fallston, Md., native stopped a pair of James Madison shots from going in the net when Edwards, who made six saves, was pulled away from the goal.
Bucknell was outshot by the Dukes by a 15-11 margin, while James Madison recorded 10 corner kicks to one for the Bison.
Bucknell continues its five-match homestand Wednesday afternoon against NJIT. The game is scheduled to kick off at 4 p.m. at West Fields.
