LEWISBURG, Pa. - After falling behind 1-0 in the first minute of the game, the Bucknell men's water polo team scored 17 unanswered goals, including a team-high three from senior Aaron Platshon, to defeat Slippery Rock 17-2 during the final day of play at the Bucknell Invitational Sunday morning at Kinney Natatorium.
Eric Olson gave Slippery Rock the early lead by scoring his first goal of the game just 46 seconds into the contest, but Platshon answered with two goals less than two minutes apart to give the Bison a 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Bison carried that momentum over to the second quarter where four different players tallied goals to make the halftime spread 6-1.
The offensive barrage continued in the second half as Bucknell scored 11 more goals, including six in the third quarter, before Olson recorded his second score of the game with just over 10 seconds remaining. The Bison outshot Slippery Rock 24-11 for the game.
Bucknell, which reached 17 goals for the first time since a 20-11 victory over Washington & Jefferson in 2000, saw 11 different players score. Joining Platshon with more than one goal were Sean Robinson, Elliot Benoist, Jason Rechel and Kyle Roslyn who each found the back of the net twice.
Trevor Mullins started and played the first three quarters in goal for the Orange and Blue and made five saves while allowing a season-low one goal. Freshman Lucas Belenky relieved Mullins in the fourth quarter.
With the win, which was Bucknell's first by 15 goals since a 17-2 victory over MIT in 1998, the Bison finished the three-day Bucknell Invitational with a 3-0 record. Overall, the Bison stand at 4-2 this year and will be back in action at Kinney Natatorium next Saturday, Sept. 18, against George Washington (12 p.m.) and Johns Hopkins (8 p.m.).
