LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's water polo team hosted a pair of league games Saturday at Kinney Natatorium and came away with a sweep of George Washington and Johns Hopkins to improve to 6-2 (3-0 CWPA) on the season. In the nightcap, the Bison nipped the Blue Jays by a 6-5 score when senior Elliot Benoist skipped a shot in with five seconds remaining. In the first game, Bucknell defeated the Colonials 9-3.
Benoist, a co-captain who had two goals in the game, skipped the winning shot in following an ejection of a Johns Hopkins player created a 6-on-5 situation for the Bison. The Blue Jays tried to answer, but their final attempt went wide of the goal.
Senior Jay Danforth led the way on the offensive end with three goals, while Bradley Roslyn chipped in one score.
In goal, Trevor Mullins completed an outstanding day with a season-high 11 saves to bring his total for the day to 18 after he made seven in the first game of the day.
In the opener against George Washington, Bucknell fell behind 1-0 when the Colonials scored within the first 30 seconds of play, but the Bison reeled off six straight goals to hold a 6-1 halftime lead. Bucknell then outscored George Washington by a 3-2 margin after intermission.
Leading the way in the game were Benoist, senior Aaron Platshon and Danforth, who each netted two goals. Sean Robinson, Nick Ferring and Kyle Roslyn also tallied scores for the Bison.
Bucknell returns to the pool next weekend when it travels to Cambridge, Mass., for the ECAC Championships. Its first game is slated for 9:15 p.m. Friday against Queens. Saturday, the schedule includes battles with Navy and host Harvard.
