LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's water polo team raced out to a 5-0 first-quarter lead behind goals from five different Bison en route to a 13-6 victory over Gannon in their second game of the Bucknell Invitational Saturday morning at Kinney Natatorium.
Freshman Jason Rechel's goal just 1:43 into the game broke the ice for Bucknell (3-2, 1-0) and goals from seniors Nick Ferring, Aaron Platshon, Jay Danforth and Elliot Benoist followed in the first stanza. The Bison, who led by as many as nine goals on two occasions in the second half, extended their lead to 7-1 at halftime.
Benoist and Ferring led the way with three goals apiece, while Platshon and freshman Joseph Metcalf found the back of the net twice each. Junior Bradley Roslyn, Ferring and freshman Jared Gray all had two assists to pace the squad.
Junior Trevor Mullins, who played nearly the whole contest in goal before being relieved by freshman Lucas Belenky in the closing minutes, stopped eight Golden Knight shots and allowed just four goals. Belenky came on and stopped one shot while allowing two scores in the final two minutes.
Bucknell will return to the pool later today in a pair of games that won't count in its record. The Bison will face Toronto University at 2:25 p.m. and the New York Athletic Club team at 8:55 p.m. Their next contest that counts in their overall record is slated for Sunday, Sept. 12, at 11 a.m. against Slippery Rock.
