BUSY TUESDAY INCLUDES PHOTOS, INTERVIEWS, PRACTICE
LEWISBURG, Pa. -- It was a hectic Tuesday for the Bison football squad, but also a milestone day for the rookies who donned college game uniforms for the first time as part of photo/media day. In addition to a regular day of meetings, lifting and practice, the team also posed for individual and team photos, and met members of the local media for interviews. Unseasonably moderate temperatures also made for comfortable practice conditions, as head coach Tim Landis led the Bison through a nearly three-hour workout on Tuesday as the countdown to Villanova reached 16 days.
FIRST PRESEASON SCRIMMAGE SLATED FOR THURSDAY
Sandwiched between double practice sessions on Wednesday and Friday, Bucknell will conduct their first intrasquad scrimmage of the preseason on Thursday in Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. Tim Landis indicated that the first hour of the workout -- which begins at 2:30 p.m. -- will focus on individual and position group work, much like a normal practice. Then he plans to scrimmage for 80 to 90 plays. In addition to full-field competition, which will likely start with the first-team offense against the first-team defense, the staff will also mix in specific game situations, such as goal-line offense and defense, third/fourth downs, red zone and two-minute drills.
"We will be two weeks from the opening game, and this is a chance for us to evaluate who is going to be on the field for us against Villanova on September 2," said Landis of Thursday's scrimmage. "We have been looking at Villanova as well as other teams on our schedule throughout camp, but coming out of the scrimmage we will start to focus our attention on Villanova as if it is a normal game week."
Landis strategically scheduled the two preseason scrimmages on Thursdays, since the season opener at Villanova is on a Thursday. "The second scrimmage will be a bit more game-like," Landis said, "and we will be able to simulate a season situation by giving the players a week to recoup before Villanova."
SPORTS NETWORK I-AA POLL ANNOUNCED THIS WEEK
Four Bucknell opponents were listed among the top 25 in The Sports Network's Division I-AA preseason poll, which was released on Monday. Defending Patriot League champion and national finalist Colgate is ranked fifth, with season-opening opponent Villanova also cracking the top 10 at No. 9. Also on the Bison's 2004 schedule is No. 22 Lehigh and No. 25 Penn, while Fordham was listed among "others receiving votes." Defending national champion Delaware is ranked No. 1, followed by Southern Illinois, Montana and Wofford.
BISON BRIEFS
Senior LB Mike Shover worked out some at tight end for the first time and made a nifty over-the-shoulder catch on a pass from QB Daris Wilson ... among the most-requested interviews at Tuesday's media day were the lcoal players, including Shover, Cole Ciesnolevicz, Stephen Matzura and Ryan Slater.
