Bucknell freshman Christa Sawko competed Friday evening in the 400-meter hurdles at the USA Track and Field Junior Outdoor Championships, finishing 17th of 24 competitors to start the race in the event's preliminary competition with a time of 1:05.17. The event is taking place on the campus of Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.
Sawko's collegiate best is 1:03.12, which turned out to be the 10th-place time of Baylor's Lauren Tillman, the first competitor not to make Saturday's finals. The top entrant from each of the four flights, plus the next five best times overall, advanced to tomorrow's race.
Bucknell will have one more competitor at the USA junior meet, freshman Ann Doty, who will compete in the triple jump on Sunday afternoon. Freshman pole vaulter Melanie Buczko suffered an injury in the weeks since the NCAA Championships and had to withdraw from the junior national competition.
To qualify for the meet, athletes had to be under 20 for the entirety of 2004 and meet event standards. The top two finishers in each event advance to the IAAF's World Junior Championships next month in Italy.
