LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell head baseball coach Gene Depew has announced which members of the incoming Class of 2008 will don the Bison uniform next season, inviting 14 new Bison onto the squad. Depew lists six pitchers among the group, as well as four infielders, and two catchers and two outfielders.
The Bison will lose five field starters from this season, plus the designated hitter, as well as three of its four weekend starters, all to graduation. Though seasoned members of the 2004 Bison squad could earn starting roles, members of the incoming class will compete for those positions as well.
The incoming outfielders include Michael Barrett of Albany, N.Y./Albany Academy and Austin Turban of Northfield, Ill./New Trier. "Barrett will contribute in the outfield as he is a strong athlete who runs and hits well. Turban is a solid outfielder who runs and throws well with potential as a left-handed hitter," commented Depew.
Shaun Hirsch of Morristown, N.J/Morristown and Neal White of Gloucester, Mass./St. John's Prep are the two new catchers. "Hirsch is a solid catcher with very good offensive potential and power with the bat. White is a very talented defensive catcher with great hands and feet. He has the potential to contribute early," said Depew.
Bucknell's four new infielders include Jason Buursma of Seattle, Wash./Lakeside School, Graham Douds of Ojai, Calif./Thacher School, Chris Pieper of Port Washington, N.Y./Schreiber and Tim Hansberry of Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield. "Buursma is a versatile athlete who can play either corner and who we may also look at as a pitcher. Hansberry is a smooth athlete with good feet and hands and who could help us as a left-handed hitter. Pieper is a strong, versatile athlete who can either play a middle infield position or any outfield spot," said Depew.
The incoming pitchers include Max Goldstein of Atlanta, Ga./Paideria School, Joe Greene of Middletown, Del./Middletown, Ed Kerstetter of Glenolden, Pa./Interboro, Eddie Rubbo of Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge, Bryan Snyder of Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin and Matt Wilson of Toronto, Ontario/Northern Secondary School. "Goldstein will help us on the mount with a good command of several different pitches, and we will look to enhance his strength and velocity. Greene has an excellent pitcher's body at 6'5". We will refine his mechanics and I hope he can develop into a good pitcher. Kerstetter is a good hard left-handed thrower at 6'3" and we will work to get him some more consistency. Rubbo is an excellent athlete and could be a two-way player with his excellent defense at third base. He handles the bat well and throws in the high-80s. Snyder could be able to contribute early as a left-handed pitcher, and Wilson has been working at the IMG Academies [in Bradenton, Fla., where Bucknell has spent recent spring breaks playing other schools] after graduating high school a year ago. He should be a developed pitcher," said Depew.
