LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell head men's soccer coach Brendan Nash has announced his recruiting class for the fall of 2004. The class includes nine different student-athletes from eight different states.
"What the program has done the last few years has really opened up the eyes of potential recruits across the country," commented Nash. "This year's class is a very impressive group from all across the United States. What I like best about this class is their competitive nature as a whole. Through either the ODP (Olympic Development Program) or their club teams, these student-athletes have been competing at the highest level for years."
Following is an alphabetical list of the nine Bucknell men's soccer recruits that comprise the class of 2008:
Corey Curnutte (Waterford, Mich./Detroit Country Day) - Curnutte was captain and MVP of his high school team. He was named to the Michigan All-State team during both his junior and senior years. He has been a member of the Michigan ODP team and plays club for Vardar III.
Nash on Curnutte: "Corey brings a lot of versatility to our program. He can play a number of positions well and we are looking forward to finding out where he will help our program best."
David Harris (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) - Harris was captain of his high school team and named All District his junior and senior years. He plays club for the Richmond Kickers.
Nash on Harris: "David is a smart and controlled player, who is constantly trying to improve all aspects of his game. He will fit very well into our possession system."
Andy Kummer (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) - Kummer was captain of his high school team. He has been named to the All-Greater Rochester team the last three years. He has been with the New York West ODP team and plays club for the Rochester Junior Rhinos.
Nash on Kummer: "Andy was identified at our summer camp. He showed great skill and a lot of grit. Pittsford has had a great relationship with Bucknell University and Andy will keep that tradition going."
Joey Kuterbach (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) - Kuterbach was captain of his high school team and named a NSCAA Regional All-American (Southwest) as well as First Team All-State his junior and senior year. He plays club for Texas Heat.
Nash on Kuterbach: "Joey stood out as the number one goalkeeper during our summer soccer camp. He is a vocal keeper and a tireless worker."
Joe Mellot (Highland, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) - Mellot was captain of his high school team and named First Team All-MIAA (Maryland Independent Athletic Association). He plays club for the Olney Panthers.
Nash on Mellot: "I feel Joe is going to surprise quite a few people. He was identified at our summer soccer camp and throughout the week he continued to show he was going to be an excellent defender in the Patriot League."
Borja Polo (Miami, Fla./Belen Jesuit) - Polo was captain of his high school team. He was MVP of the Regional finals. He plays club ball for the Plantation Eagles.
Nash on Polo: "Borja was also identified during our summer soccer camp. He is a natural left sided player. He has great skill and is dangerous in one v. one situations. He will bring a new dimension to our attack."
Dan Shuman (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) - Shuman was captain of his high school team and named an Eastern Massachusetts All-Star. He has been a member of the Massachusetts ODP Team and plays club for FC United.
Nash on Shuman: "Dan is another goalkeeper with a great work rate. Replacing our two graduating senior goalkeepers was a priority with our recruiting and we feel we are bringing in two excellent keepers."
Alex Wilkinson (LaVale, Md./Bishop Walsh) - Wilkinson was captain of his high school team and named First Team All-State (Private Schools). He has been a member of the Maryland ODP team and plays club for the Bethesda Blazing Sharks.
Nash on Wilkinson: "Alex is a very good athlete. He came through our summer soccer camp and showed the staff he could play under control and many different positions."
Justin Wolf (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) - Wolf participated in the Chicago Top Talent program, foregoing high school soccer. He has been a member of the Illinois ODP team and plays club for Sockers FC.
Nash on Wolf: "Justin is going to be a very nice addition to our midfield. He has a passion for the game of soccer and is very driven to becoming a solid Division I soccer player."
"With the schedule we are playing in 2004 I felt we really needed to add some depth to our roster," said Nash. "I think this class will make a quick adjustment to Division I soccer and, more importantly, the Bucknell style of play. This is a fine group of student-athletes who will keep our program competing for the Patriot League Championship during their four year careers."
The 2004 Bucknell men's soccer team will kick off its season on Saturday, September 4, at Hartwick College at 7:00 p.m.
