LEWISBURG, Pa. - Sophomore Asher Salam (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) has been honored with a Patriot League Award of Good Sporting Conduct for his positive attitude on the tennis court. Salam was nominated by David Shook, the head coach of the Lehigh tennis squad.
"Mr. Salam always conducts himself in the highest manner on the court. He brings the best out of his opponents, both their tennis play and sporting behavior. On April 8, 2004, he lost the first set in a very important match, yet continued to demonstrate exceptional sportsmanship by complementing his opponent from Lehigh. His level-headed control of adversity allowed him to win his match," Shook wrote in his nomination.
Salam finished the year with a 15-14 singles record and 11-15 doubles mark. During the Lehigh match, Salam came from behind to defeat Jon Swanson, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, though the win was one of only two points the Bison could manage, hindering Bucknell's chance for a Patriot League Tournament berth. The team finished 9-11 in dual matches, beginning the turnaround from the 7-21 finish in 2002-03.
