BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Sophomore first baseman Lauren Wible dropped a single into left field in the first inning against Lehigh, but that would be Bucknell's only hit of the game as the Mountain Hawks claimed a 5-0 victory in the opening round of the 2004 Patriot League Softball Tournament on Saturday, May 1. The Bison, the fourth-seed, will now face the loser of the Army vs. Colgate game, being played now, in the double-elimination format tournament.
Lehigh (38-15-2) pitcher Emily Ling started the game by hitting freshman right fielder Jen James, and two outs later gave up the single to Wible. The right hander settled in, however, striking out Kris Devore and facing the minimum through the final six innings to come away with the victory.
Bison pitcher Kelli Haskins lasted just one full inning on the mound, giving up three hits to the Mountain Hawks and falling into an early 1-0 hole. Struggling to get ahead of the batters, Haskins faced three Lehigh hitters in the second inning before giving way to sophomore Julie Williams, who entered the game with the bases loaded and no outs.
Williams got first-team all-leaguer Shana Treon to fly out to centerfield for the first out, but Whitney Schenbeck followed with a single up the middle to score Liz Gripp, and Kelly Kliewer crossed the plate after a botched run-down resulted in a Bison error. A strikeout and grounder to third allowed the Orange and Blue to get out of the frame with no further damage, trailing 3-0.
Lehigh went down in order in the third, and Williams got out of a one-out, two-on jam in the fourth before running into more trouble in the fifth. Wieder led off the frame with a triple to right centerfield. Erin Hengemuhle drew a walk, and Lauren Haney hit into a 463 double play, but Wieder scored easily from third for the 4-0 lead. After Gripp singled up the middle, Kliewer delivered an RBI double down the left field line to give the Mountain Hawks the 5-0 advantage.
Treon and Jessica Young both went 2-for-4 for Lehigh, while Kliewer was 2-for-3. Ling struck out eight Bucknell batters in addition to throwing the one-hitter.
Williams pitched five innings, giving up seven hits and two runs. She struck out two and issued one walk.
The Bison (14-25) play again at 1:00 p.m. against the loser of the Army vs. Colgate game. Army is the second-seed, while the Raiders are the third.
