ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Bucknell senior catcher Angela Stackhouse went 4-for-5 on the day in trying to lead the Bison to a doubleheader sweep of Patriot League power Lehigh, but it was the Mountain Hawks prevailing in both games, taking a 2-1 opener and claiming the 6-3 nightcap. The squad's played the games, originally scheduled for Sunday, on Friday, April 9, at Patriot's Park in Allentown, Pa., due to inclement weather on the way to the Lehigh Valley.
In game one, both teams got on the scoreboard in the first inning, and that was all the offense either one would produce.
Freshman Meghan Feller drew a walk as the second batter of the game, and after stealing second, scored on Stackhouse's single. Sophomore's Lauren Wible and Kris Devore followed Stackhouse with back-to-back singles to load the bases, but Lehigh's Emily Ling got two big strikeouts to end the inning with just the 1-0 deficit.
The Mountain Hawks promptly got that run back in the bottom of the inning when Mary Wieder hit a two-out double to score Shana Treon, who led off the frame with a single to centerfield. Lauren Haney followed Wieder's double with an RBI single to give Lehigh the 2-1 lead.
Neither team could manage to get the runner's around the bases after that first inning and Lehigh came away with the 2-1 win. Ling went the distance for the victory, striking out eight and allowing six hits.
Junior Kelli Haskins was the hard-luck loser for the Bison, giving up seven hits and striking out one.
In the nightcap, BU came back from an early 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth. The Mountain Hawks again answered Bucknell's output with a three-run fifth and one more run in the bottom of the sixth.
Lehigh freshman pitcher Heather Hamasaki had a dominating performance on the mound, striking out 14 Bucknell batters and allowing just five hits in seven innings of work. Sophomore Julie Williams was on the mound for the Orange and Blue, giving up 11 hits and striking out two.
BU's three-run fifth inning came on three hits with two outs. Junior Jill Pompeii got the squad a baserunner when she was hit by a pitch. Freshman Jen James and senior Kristen Potts followed with singles to load the bases, and Stackhouse delivered a bases clearing single to give the Bison the 3-2 lead.
Lehigh also did its damage in the fifth with two outs, scoring three times with two of those coming on a Wieder single. The Mountain Hawks struck again in the sixth to finish the scoring on Kelly Kliewer's RBI double. Bucknell is 7-15 overall and has dropped eight in a row. The Bison are 3-7 in Patriot League action and will face Lehigh again on Saturday, April 10, at 1:00 p.m. Lehigh is 27-11-2 overall and 8-2 in conference play.
