DURHAM, N.C. and COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Bucknell track and field teams finished their competition for the weekend split between two meets, the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C., and the Maryland Invitational in College Park, Md. The Duke meet was not team-scored, but the Bucknell women finished fourth at Maryland with 64 1/2 while the men took 11th with 19. Three athletes on Saturday made alterations to Bucknell all-time top-10 lists, all on the women's side.
Maria Garcia broke her own school record in the hammer throw, winning the competition at Maryland with a toss of 186'1", 38'8" better than the second-place finisher, teammate Laura Schaffer. The throw betters her previous school record by 5'2".
Christa Sawko had two Bucknell top-10 finishes at the Duke meet. The freshman finished the 400-meter hurdles in 1:04.53, improving upon her ninth-best all-time finish by one-hundredth of a second and staying in the number nine spot while claiming the fifth spot on the 800-meter list by finishing in 2:14.25. At the Maryland meet, freshman Sarah Groman moved into a three-way tie for ninth with her 5'1" high jump.
No new athletes on either the men's or women's side qualified for IC4A/ECAC competition at either of the meets outside of Garcia, who had previously met the hammer standard. While Garcia was Bucknell's only event winner between the meets on Saturday, the highest-placing male Bison was Josh Kaehler, who placed fifth in the javelin at Maryland with a 177' ?" throw.
The Bison will host their first of back-to-back home meets next Friday and Saturday when the Bison Outdoor Classic comes to Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
