LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's and women's track and field contingent enjoyed a very successful day Saturday, combining for seven first-place finishes on the final day of the Bison Outdoor Classic. Among the stars of the day were senior stars Maria Garcia, who broke her own school record in the hammer throw with a toss of 188 feet, 11 ? inches and Noel Powell, who eked out a pair of wins in the 100 and 200-meter dashes.
Garcia's runaway victory in the hammer - her next closest competitor was more than eight feet behind her - highlighted a tremendous day for the women's throwers. Laura Schaffer closed the afternoon with a win in the discus with a toss of 137' 9", her personal best and the sixth-best twirl in school history. Erin Lee (132' 10") and Angela McFarland (132' 2 ?") took second and third, while Marjorie Grap took fifth at 125' 11".
Schaffer also took second in the shot put, setting another PR with a mark of 43' 11 ?", the second-best put in school history. Grap was fifth in the shot at 41' ?". Another runner-up in the throws was Megan Frederick, who threw the javelin 120' 1 ?".
Jennifer Marsh backed up her second-place finish in Friday night's 1,500 meters with a victory in the 800 on Saturday. Marsh finished in a personal-best 2:16.21, moving her from 10th to ninth on Bucknell's all-time list.
Four other women turned in second-place finishes. Christa Sawko was runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking in at 1:03.95, the sixth-best time in school history. Sarah Groman, a standout freshman volleyball player this fall, high jumped an even 5' 0" to take second in that event. Monique Boley (57.72) and Amy Calvo (57.73) finished 2-3 in the 400 meters. Melanie Buczko cleared 11' 9 ?", her personal best outdoors. Buczko qualified for the ECAC Championships and missed the school outdoor record by two inches.
There was no shortage of quality performances from the Bucknell men's team. Most notably, Powell captured both the 100 and 200 dashes by a nose. His time of 10.96 in the 100 was one-hundredth of a second faster than Cornell's Rahim Wooley. Powell's 21.72 in the 200, an IC4A qualifying time, nipped Buffalo's Bryan Weinstein by .04 seconds.
The Bison men also won both the 4x100 and 4x800 relays.
Bucknell's lone second-place finisher on the men's side was Jeff Arek, who cleared 14' 7 ?" in the pole vault. Third-place finishers for the Bison were Josh Kaehler in the javelin (182' 6"), Tom Prochilo in the 800 (1:55.63), Drew Folk in the high jump (6' 2"), John MacFeeters in the 110-meter hurdles (16.03), Mark Caroleo in the 1,500 meters (4:05.28), Dan Frake in the hammer throw (160' 3").
