LEWISBURG, Pa. - Meredith Wright registered a career-high 11 points on five goals and six assists and Andrea Paraud added a personal-best six goals to lead Bucknell to a record-setting 23-7 rout of visiting Denver Saturday night at frosty Graham Field.
The Bison improved to 5-4 on the season, in the process breaking the school record for goals in a game. The previous mark was 22, set against Mount St. Mary's on March 29, 1988. The victory over Denver just missed the school mark for widest margin of victory, which was 18 goals (22-4) in that 1988 win over Mount St. Mary's. It was the first time Bucknell topped the 20-goal plateau since a 21-11 victory over East Stroudsburg on April 15, 1993.
Bucknell led 9-6 in the early moments of the second half before tearing off 14 of the game's final 15 goals.
The Bison raced to a 5-0 lead behind two goals each from Paraud and Wright and one from Amy Hasler. But after being held scoreless for the first 20:36 of the contest, Denver (3-7) battled back with three goals in a 1:04 span to cut Bucknell's lead to 5-3.
Bucknell still led by two at 6-4 when Emily Burman scored back-to-back goals, both in spectacular fashion as she dodged multiple defenders. Paraud's tally off a Wright feed from behind the cage with only three seconds left in the half gave Bucknell a 9-5 cushion at intermission.
Patience Baldwin cut it to 9-6 with an unassisted marker just 1:36 into the second half, but Hasler answered just over a minute later, and the Bison were off to the races. A healthy 20-12 edge in draw controls gave the Bison a significant edge in time of possession, and they took advantage, scoring five goals in only 3:15 to break the game wide open.
Wright scored twice in 18 seconds to make it 13-6 with 24:22 to play and Katie Edge and Hasler tacked on two more for a 15-6 lead at the 17:25 mark. Crystal Jack scored after a long run to stop the bleeding temporarily for the Pioneers, but Bucknell scored eight times in the game's final 11:51 to make it a blowout.
Abby Brewster and Shauna Weinstein both scored their first career goals, the latter providing the record-breaking 23rd score with seven seconds to play. Laura Seiboth also netted her first of the season. Kelly Doyle's second-half assist marked her first career point.
Wright's six assists tied her own Patriot League record, which she initially set last season in a win over Saint Francis (Pa.). She moved into second place on Bucknell's career assist chart with 46. Melissa Montefusco had 72 assists from 1999-02.
Paraud added an assist for a career-high seven-point evening, while Hasler and Laura Nuss scored three times apiece. Lost in all the offensive fireworks was a tremendous performance by the Bison defense, backstopped by goalie Lizzy McDaniel who had eight saves. Lauren Kremer continued her fine campaign with three ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers.
Baldwin and Steph Greenlees led Denver with two goals each. Goalie Steph Schneider made 11 saves as Denver was outshot 40-19.
Bucknell returns to action on Tuesday with a non-league game at LaSalle at 4 p.m.
