LEWISBURG, Pa. - Rich Bennett ran for two touchdowns and Cole Ciesnolevicz threw a 69-yard TD pass to Peter Kaufman, highlighting an outstanding showing by the Bucknell offense in the annual Orange and Blue game at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium on Saturday night.
The game pitted the Bison offense against the defense, with special scoring rules installed to reward such things as scoring plays, long plays, turnovers and sacks. The offense, which was able to control the ball effectively for much of the night, handily outscoring the defense under the improvised scoring system.
Under the direction of three quarterbacks - Daris Wilson, John Henry Jackson and Ciesnolevicz - the offense posted five touchdowns and collected points for 22 first downs. Early in the second quarter Anthony Lovelace rumbled 14 yards for the first touchdown of the evening. On the very next series, Wilson slashed his way into the end zone for a nifty 35-yard scoring run.
The offense closed out the first half with Ciesnolevicz's long strike to Kaufman on a post route. The duo just missed hooking up on virtually the identical play just moments earlier.
Bennett, the Bison's No. 2 fullback behind Blamah Sarnor, scored on runs of 3 and 2 yards in the fourth quarter. Jackson also scored on a 4-yard run, set up by Sarnor's 14-yard gallop, in the final period.
Bucknell's entire backfield had strong nights, with Kaufman and Frank Lazio combining for several tough catches out of the backfield. Rapheal Hammond rushed for nearly 90 yards, including a nifty 28-yarder late in the game that set up Bennett's final touchdown.
Despite the one-sided score, the Bison defense also had its moments. Linebacker Jeff Orazi stripped a ballcarrier for the lone turnover of the night, resulting in three points for the Blue team. The defense posted two sacks and three other tackles for loss and also forced six punts. Jerome Acy broke up two passes and David Frisbey deflected one.
The intrasquad game marked the end of 2004 spring practice. Bucknell will next don its game jerseys on Thursday, Sept. 2, when the Bison open their 2004 season at Villanova.
