VILLANOVA, Pa. - Bucknell used a balanced scoring attack, getting goals from 10 different players in a 17-3 route of Maryland at the Southern Division Championship on Saturday, April 17. The Bison will now play for third place in the conference, facing Villanova on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. A third place finish would match the highest finish in program history.
Sunday's game with Villanova has an interesting twist to it, as it will pit former Bison player and volunteer assistant coach Paige Cull '01 against her one-time coach, John Zeigler. Cull took over as head coach of the Wildcats program this year.
Against Maryland, the Orange and Blue took control of the game from the start, building a 4-0 lead after just one quarter of play. The squad tacked on four more before halftime, and allowed the Terps to score just once for an 8-1 lead at the intermission. After winning the third period 3-1, BU exploded for six fourth quarter goals to come away with the dominating victory.
Of the 14 Bucknell players who saw time in the game, 12 had at least one point, including a season-high four assists from sophomore Christina Behrens. Freshmen Elizabeth Jensen and Jessica Trimis were the highest goal producers with three each, and three other players tossed in two. Jensen also recorded two helpers in the game, moving her into a tie for the highest number of assists by a first-year player in school history with 29.
With her two goal output, junior co-captain Meg Blitzer increased her team-high total to 58 scores on the year, just three shy of a Bucknell single-season record. The driver also needs just 13 more points to set a school single-season mark for points.
On the defensive side of the ball, rookie Adrienne Fischer had five of Bucknell's 23 steals, while Trimis led the way with three ejections drawn. Freshman Mandy Bynum played the first half in goal for BU, making four saves and allowing just one goal. Classmate Katie Colgan played the final two quarters, stopping seven shots and allowing two goals.
Bucknell is 13-16 overall after registering its highest offensive output of the season.
