VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Bucknell women's water polo took a 4-0 lead at halftime and never looked back on its way to a 9-4 victory over host Villanova at the Southern Division Championship on Sunday, April 18. With the win, the Bison claimed third place in the conference, matching the program's best-ever finish.
Freshman Elizabeth Jensen led the way with three goals and two assists. With her helpers, Jensen set a school record for assists by a rookie with 31 on the year.
The Orange and Blue led just 1-0 after one quarter, but scored three in the second while holding the Wildcats scoreless for the first 14 minutes. Bucknell won the second half 5-4 en route to the 9-4 victory.
Senior Kelly Hofstetter and freshman Taylor Voeltz were stellar on the defensive end, registering five steals each. Junior Meg Blitzer also had three swipes for BU.
Freshman Mandy Bynum made the start in goal, stopping four Villanova shots and allowing three goals. Classmate Katie Colgan played in the fourth quarter, registering two saves and allowing one score.
The top-two place winners earn an automatic bid to the Eastern Championship, being hosted by Bucknell (14-16) next weekend, but the Bison still have the possibility of earning an at-large spot in the tournament.
