VILLANOVA, Pa. - For the third time this season, and the sixth time in the last six meetings, the Bucknell women's water polo team has dropped a game to George Washington, this time falling 7-6 to the Colonials in the opening round of play at the Southern Division Championship at Villanova on Saturday, April 17.
The Bison struggled to get their offense going, scoring only one goal in each of the first three quarters. In the meantime, George Washington built a 6-3 lead entering the final frame. The Orange and Blue outscored the Colonials 3-1 in the fourth quarter, but could not get the equalizer before time expired for the one-goal loss.
Juniors Meg Blitzer and Katie Hartigan led the offense with three and two goals, respectively. Blitzer also had one assist for four points, while freshman Elizabeth Jensen led the team with three assists and one score for four points of her own.
Defensively, rookie goalkeeper Mandy Bynum and classmates Mallory Sullivan and Taylor Voeltz each registered three steals, while Blitzer came away with two. Bynum also finished the game with nine saves for the Bison.
Bucknell, playing for a chance to advance to the Eastern Championship which it is hosting next weekend, will face Maryland at 8:15 p.m. The winner of that contest will play for third place on Sunday. The Orange and Blue are 12-16 overall.
