BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Bucknell offense could manage just a combined four hits in two games against Lehigh on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Mountain Hawks 3-1 and 4-0. The Bison only recorded three hits in the opener, and were victims of a one-hit performance by Kate Arico in game two.
Senior catcher Angela Stackhouse accounted for BU's only run on the afternoon with her fourth homerun of the season in the top of the seventh inning of game one. Stackhouse's shot came with the Orange and Blue already trailing 3-0 entering their final at-bats.
Lehigh got all three of their runs in the third inning. The Mountain Hawks collected four of their six hits in the game in the third, and scored all of their runs with two outs. Bucknell pitcher Kelli Haskins got Kelly Kliewer to foul out to open the inning, and then struck out Mendy Martin for the second out of the frame. Lehigh rallied, however, getting four singles and a walk on the next five batters, powered by Jessica Young's two-RBI shot, to take the lead.
Emily Ling, who allowed just one hit through the first five innings, was dominating on the mound, striking out 13 Bucknell batters and walking none. Haskins scattered six Lehigh hits over six innings, recording two strikeouts.
In the nightcap, the Mountain Hawks staked Arico to a 3-0 lead after the first inning, and added another run in the bottom of the third to build a 4-0 advantage. That was more than enough for the sophomore right-hander, who struck out three, issued no walks in the game and faced just one batter over the minimum on the way to the one-hit gem.
Stackhouse was again the spoiler, recording the only Bison hit of the contest in the fourth inning with two outs.
Bucknell is 7-17 overall and 3-9 in Patriot League play. The Orange and Blue travel to Siena for a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, April 15, beginning at 3 p.m. Lehigh improves to 29-11-2 overall and takes over first place in the conference with a 10-2 record.
