SHAMOKIN DAM, Pa. - The Bucknell women's crew first varsity eight split its races with Lehigh and Temple, while the second varsity eight came in ahead of both visiting crews, and the novice eight provided a victory over Temple as the crews competed in their final home event of the spring season on Saturday, April 10.
The Bison and Lehigh took to the water early this morning, with just the varsity eight boats racing. BU's first varsity eight, consisting of coxswain-Julia Keyser, stroke-Jill Harrington, 7-Vi Ngo, 6-Lauren Olsen, 5-Jessica Noonan, 4-Teal Zeisler, 3-Joan Wendler 2-Alexis Will and bow-Rachel Trusheim, crossed the finish line in first with a time of 7:21.
The second varsity eight was not far behind with a 7:25 as the crew of coxswain-Mary Kellam, stroke-Rebecca Newman, 7-Julie Engel, 6-Lisa Kim, 5-Meredith Kim, 4-Elizabeth Marut, 3-Jennifer Prunoske, 2-Ashley White and bow-Allison DeKnight just edged out the Mountain Hawks lightweight eight time of 7:26.
Both varsity crews, in addition to the novice eight and the novice four, got back in the water later in the morning to square off against Temple. In the first race, the novice eight of coxswain-Julia Keyser, stroke-Christine Drasba, 7-Tabitha Smith, 6-Danielle Monteverde, 5-Erin Henry, 4-Jenna Goldstein, 3-Laura Roberts, 2-Marianne Prabhu and bow-Caitlin Feigenbaum came in ahead of Temple's crew by a full five seconds. The team stuck with Temple for the first half of the race, and eventually pulled away at the midway point to win in 7:18.
In the women's novice four, coxswain-Becky Michaud, 4-Megan Chapin, 3-Rachel Goldstein, 2-Susan Shadle and 1-Ashley Kalinske went up against Temple's top-4, finishing second in a time of 8:42. The squad did defeat Temple's second four by 31 seconds.
The Orange and Blue second varsity eight cut 20 seconds off of its early morning time against Lehigh to defeat Temple, which crossed the line in 7:14. The crew understroked the Owls 31-34, maximizing their power per stroke to come away with the nine second victory.
Bucknell's first varsity eight was not as successful against Temple, falling to the visitors by a 13 second difference. Despite knocking 17 seconds off of their time against Lehigh, the first varsity eight could not overcome a slow start, falling behind by a full length and eventually trailing in open water as the Owls crossed the line in 6:51.
