HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Bucknell crew headed away from the home course in Shamokin Dam for a race for the first time this spring, heading to Colgate to row against the Raiders and St. Lawrence University on Saturday, April 17.
The BU novice boats turned in two solid races. The novice four of coxswain Rebecca Michaud, Marianne Prabhu, Caitlin Feigenbaum, Susan Shadle and Ashley Kalinske defeated both opponents by a considerable margin. The novice eight was also successful with a nearly eight-second victory over its competitors. The novice eight consisted of coxswain Julia Keyser, stroke Christine Drasba, Kathryn Wood, Danielle Monteverde, Tabitha Smith, Jenna Goldstein, Meredith Henry, Megan Chapin and Rachel Goldstein.
In the varsity races, the Bison were not as successful. In the second varsity eight, the Orange and Blue crew of coxswain Mary Kellam, stroke Rebecca Newman, 7 Julie Engel, 6 Lisa Kim, 5 Meredith Kim, 4 Elizabeth Marut, 3 Jennifer Prunoske, 2 Ashley White and bow Allison DeKnight gave Colgate a close race until the final 500 meters when the Raiders pulled away to get a four second victory. The BU boat did defeat St. Lawrence's crew.
In the featured race, the first varsity eight, coxswain Kyra Harris, stroke Jill Harrington, Vi Ngo, Lauren Olsen, Jessica Noonan, Joan Wendler, Teal Zeisler, Alexis Will, and Rachel Trusheim struggled with a strong head wind and fell behind early, and could never recover to get ahead of winner Colgate. The Bison squad also finished ahead of St. Lawrence to avoid the sweep.
Bucknell heads to New England next weekend to race on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass., for the Patriot League Challenge on Sunday, April 25.
