LORETTO, Pa. - Bucknell junior Kelli Haskins threw five innings of one-hit softball and the Bison offense supported her with seven runs as the BU team defeated St. Francis (Pa.), 7-0, in five-innings on Wednesday, March 31. The contest was called after the fifth frame due to rain, and the second game of the scheduled doubleheader was not started.
The Orange and Blue wasted little time setting the tone, staking Haskins to a 2-0 lead before she even stepped on the mound. Freshman Meghan Feller drew a one-out walk before senior Angela Stackhouse continued her hot-hitting with a homer to right field.
Haskins walked the first batter she faced, but sat the next three down in order to get out of the first.
After St. Francis held the Bison scoreless in the second, the only inning the Red Flash would accomplish that, the squad manufactured another run in the third. Feller walked again with one out, before stealing second, and scoring on an error by the third baseman.
SFU's only hit came in the third inning on Sarah Rebar's one-out single to second base. Haskins got Kate Lancaster to pop up to second, and caught Siobhan Gerber looking at the third strike to head to the fourth.
Bucknell struck twice in the top of both the fourth and fifth innings. Freshman Jen James, senior Jenna Fitch and junior Jill Pompeii each singled in the fourth, and a passed ball with the bases loaded allowed James to make it a 4-0 game. Feller stepped in and drew her third walk of the day, chasing Red Flash pitcher Amanda Pighetti. Stackhouse drew a base on balls from reliever Christina Chasko, bringing in Fitch, before Chasko got sophomore Lauren Wible to ground out to end the inning.
Chasko continued to struggle in the fifth, walking the first three batters of the inning to load the bases with nobody out. Fitch took advantage with an RBI single to right field, and on the next batter, all three runners advanced on a wild pitch, scoring James for the final run of the game.
Haskins tossed the first one-hitter of her career, and her first shutout of the season. Offensively, Stackhouse continued her four-game hit streak with a 1-for-2 day at the plate, including three runs batted in. Fitch had her second multiple-hit game of the season, going 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Bucknell evens its season at 7-7 overall. The Bison step back into Patriot League play with a four-game series against the defending Patriot League champion Colgate, Sat.-Sun., April 3-4. Saturday's doubleheader is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
