TOWSON, Md. - The Bucknell men's and women's tennis teams were anything but gracious guests on Tuesday afternoon at Towson, as the Bison won six out of six doubles matches and 12 of 12 singles matches between them, routing the Tigers 7-0 on each side.
It was just the second time this season that the Bison men (6-6) took all nine contests en route to a 7-0 win. Bucknell's men also defeated St. Francis (Pa.) in similar fashion on Sept. 26 during the fall season.
In men's doubles, Gerald DiChiara and Joe Menezes teamed for the first time this season and beat Towson's Chris Rowland and Todd Nagel, 9-8(3), while the season-long duo of Nick Denefrio and Matt Pikus won over Doug Ferguson and Ittai Dvir, 8-3 at second doubles. Asher Salam and Aaron Saperstein were also paired for the first time this year as they beat Mike Edison and Navin Kahn at third doubles, 8-6.
At first singles, Denefrio defeated Rowland when the Towson stringer retired down 1-0 in the second set after having dropped the first set, 6-1. DiChiara came from behind to defeat Dvir, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 at second singles, while Menezes needed a third set to beat Ferguson, 7-5, 1-6, 6-4. On the back three courts, Asher Salam got by Nagel with little trouble, 6-0, 6-1, while Matt Pikus eased by Dan Selzer, 6-3, 6-0, and Saperstein dropped a close first set before beating Joel Young, 6-7(6), 6-4, (10-5).
The 7-0 sweep was the third this year for the Bucknell women (10-1), who also took the opportunity to try some new doubles combinations. Samantha Berthod and Veronica Brown were doubles teammates for the first time this year as they beat Sarah Dumansky and Pamela Zeger, 9-7, at first doubles, while Nadezda Curcic and Tanya Sichko went 1-0 as teammates in a second doubles win over Kelly Parsons and Audrey Damrongsri, 8-2. Rebecca Kral and Chelsea Mills won their seventh match of twelve paired together this year, leading Morgan Sugar-Butter and Jessica Woolfolk 1-0 when the Towson duo retired.
The doubles win for Sichko was the 100th win combining singles and doubles of her career. The junior becomes the first Bison ever to record 100 total wins.
In singles play, Curcic stayed perfect on the spring season, winning her 10th match of the year over Dumansky, 6-3, 6-3 in her first chance on court one, while Brown moved down to court two to beat Zeger, 6-3, 6-0. Sichko defeated Parsons on court three, 6-1, 7-5, while Berthod defeated Woolfolk, 6-0, 6-3 at fourth singles. Mills stayed perfect on the year in dual singles, winning her 11th over Sugar-Butter, 6-1, 6-2, while Kral beat Damrongsri, 6-4, 7-6(4) on court six.
Both Bison teams will play again, weather permitting, against Mount St. Mary's on Thursday, April 1, at 3:30 p.m. in Lewisburg.
