LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Head coach Tim Landis put his Bucknell football team through a sprited workout lasting nearly two hours on Tuesday night at chilly Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium, marking the opening of 2004 spring football practice.
Comprising the bulk of the spring squad are 41 returning varsity letterman who helped the Bison post a third-place finish in the Patriot League last season. In Landis' first year as head coach, the Bison finished 6-6 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
While Landis and much of his staff was present well before the start of spring practice a year ago, the Bison head coach senses a much different feel this spring.
"Last year the focus had to be so multi-dimensional," said Landis. "We had to put in brand new systems on offense, defense and special teams, and at the same time instill the type of attitude that we wanted the players to carry.
"A year later the guys know the offense and they know the defense and special teams," Landis noted. "Now we can come out here and focus on getting better as a football team in terms of fundamentals and techniques. We can add things to the offense and defense to make us more dynamic."
Bucknell is scheduled to practice every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday over the next four weeks, culminating with the Orange-Blue Spring Game on Saturday, Apr. 24 at 7 p.m.
"These guys have really come a long way," lauded Landis after practice. "Everyone came out on time, ready to work, and we had a very good first practice."
