LEWISBURG, Pa. - Meredith Wright had three goals and two assists and Bucknell scored five of the game's final six goals to escape with a 12-9 Patriot League victory at Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon.
The victory was the second straight in league play for the Bison, who improved to 2-1 in the conference and 4-3 overall. Holy Cross, which received six goals from Trish Sutton, fell to 3-6, 1-2.
After Holy Cross scored the final three goals of the first half to erase a 7-4 deficit, Sutton gave the Crusaders an 8-7 lead with a goal just 2:45 into the second half. The two teams played scoreless lacrosse for the next 16 minutes before the Bison exploded for three goals in a span of 1:37 to regain the lead.
Andrea Paraud tied it off a feed from Wright with 11:18 remaining, then Nuss and Lindsey Penek scored 16 seconds apart to give the Bison a 10-8 lead. Sutton's sixth goal of the day brought Holy Cross within a goal with 8:35 to play, but Amy Hasler have the Bison a much-needed insurance tally with 3:31 left. Paraud clinched it with her second of the day with 17 seconds remaining.
Paraud finished with two goals and two assists, while Tory Field and Katie Edge also scored twice for the Bison. Goalie Lizzy McDaniel finished with 10 saves.
Holy Cross led 4-3 until Bucknell rattled off four straight goals midway through the opening period. Wright scored three times and Edge once in a six-minute span to give the Bison a 7-4 lead. But the Crusaders controlled the final 10 minutes of the half, with Sutton tallying twice and Katie Britt once to knot the game at 7-apiece at halftime.
Bucknell outshot Holy Cross 32-28, including 21-11 in the second half, and held a 15-14 edge in ground balls.
The Bison continue their Massachusetts road swing on Sunday with a 12 p.m. start at Harvard.
