LEWISBURG, Pa. - Laura Nuss scored four goals and Meredith Wright had three goals and two assists to lead the Bucknell women's lacrosse team to a 16-6 victory over Howard Tuesday night in the first-ever lacrosse game played at Graham Field.
Bucknell (1-0) also received three goals and an assist from freshman Katie Edge in her collegiate debut, as well as two goals each from Amy Hasler and Emily Burman. Brittany Merritt scored two goals to lead Howard (0-1).
With the game tied at 2-all 10 minutes into the contest, Bucknell took control with a three-goal run in a span of just 3:43. Edge's first career tally gave the host team the lead for good, and Hasler and Wright followed to pad the lead. Andrea Paraud had two of her game-high three assists during the run.
Eva Okereke and Merritt scored in succession to get Howard back within 5-4, but Bucknell would outscore its guests 4-0 over the last nine minutes of the half and 11-2 over the rest of the contest. After Wright's goal at the 8:49 mark made it 6-4, Nuss scored three straight in a span of 4:38 to make it 9-4 at the half.
Tory Field and Hasler opened the second-half scoring to give Bucknell a commanding 11-4 cushion.
Lizzie McDaniel made six saves in goal for Bucknell before yielding to freshman Kristin Gaines, who made four saves in the final 9:20 of the contest. Howard starter Maya Watkins stopped six shots before being pulled with 2:36 left in the first half, while Shatarah Ramirez made 10 saves in relief, including several point-blank stops in the second half.
Bucknell outshot Howard 45-19 and held a 31-18 edge in ground balls.
The contest marked the lacrosse debut at Graham Field, Bucknell's new AstroTurf facility that opened for field hockey in the fall. Tuesday's game was the first at the facility to be played at night thanks to a new lighting system that was recently installed.
Bucknell will play all of its home games at Graham Field this spring, except for this Saturday's game against Wagner, which will be held at 3 p.m. at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
