BRADENTON, Fla. - Behind a six-inning, three-hit performance from Bucknell starting pitcher Kevin Miller and 15 hits of their own, the Bison knocked off Columbia, 6-1, to start a seven-game trip to Bradenton, Fla. Kyle Walter led Bucknell (5-3) at the plate by going three-for-four while Jacob Moss threw three scoreless innings of relief to shut the door on the Lions (0-6) and earn his first career save. Brian Day and Steve Stutzman had two hits each, while Day had a game-high two RBI.
Miller (1-1) struck out six Lions while allowing just three hits and one earned run. Columbia's only run and Miller's toughest jam came in the second inning when the Bucknell senior gave up three of his five walks and one hit. Lion third baseman Steve Compton scored when shortstop Craig Rodwogin hit a sacrifice fly, bringing the run home.
Compton's run tied the game after Bucknell got on the board in the first. Ben Stoll led off the game with a triple, and Sam Moss brought the Bison shortstop home with a flyout to right field. The 1-1 deadlock stood for two innings before Bucknell went up 2-1 on a foul pop fly off the bat of Brian Hirschberg. Walter, who was on third, beat the throw home to give Bucknell the lead.
The sixth inning was the downfall for Columbia starter Jessen Grant. Walter singled home Stutzman, followed by Sam Moss's run off a Pete Wolf single. Day completed the scoring with his two-RBI single, scoring Wolf and Walter. Bucknell had five hits in the inning, and worked Grant for 12 hits total in the game, tying a season high with 15 total knocks. The damage could have been worse for Bucknell, which left a total of nine runners on in the game, eight of whom were in scoring position.
Roy Altman pitched 3 1/3 innings for Columbia, giving up three hits but keeping the Bison off the board. Jacob Moss allowed only one hit in his three innings of work.
Bucknell returns to the Bradenton, Fla., diamonds on Monday at 2:30 p.m. against Vermont.
