Bison Water Polo Drops Tourney Opener, 6-5 in Second Sudden-Death Period to Pomona-Pitzer

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Bucknell extended defending Division III national champion Pomona-Pitzer to a second sudden-death overtime period, but the Sagehens prevailed 6-5 in a tense opener at the Lancer Invitational at Cal Baptist on Friday afternoon.
Meg Blitzer scored twice and handed out an assist for the Bison, while Taylor Voeltz scored a goal and had a game-high eight steals. Cody Keffer and Jessica Trimis also scored for Bucknell, who fell to 6-5 on the season.
The Bison jumped out to a 2-0 lead and still led 2-1 at the half, setting the stage for a thrilling finish. Pomona-Pitzer scored in the first overtime period before the Bison tied it in the second. After a scoreless first sudden-death period, the Sagehens finally slipped one past Bucknell goalie Mandy Bynum, who finished with 13 saves and an assist.
Bucknell will next play Cal-Bakersfield at 7:30 p.m. (Eastern) on Friday.
