LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior Meghan Freese (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) of the back-to-back Patriot League champion women's swimming and diving team has been selected as the Lewisburg Hotel Bison Athlete of the Week. Freese set school records and Patriot League records in the 50 free and 100 free this weekend, and provisionally qualified for NCAA Championship competition in both events.
In the 50 free, Freese won the preliminary in a school-record 23.22 seconds, and followed it up with a 23.27-second finish in the final, beating Colgate's Chrissy Zaika by .31 seconds. In the 100 free, the senior set the school record with a preliminary time of 50.96 seconds, another school and Patriot League record, and then had a 51.04-second win in the finals. She beat Navy's Tori Throckmorton by just .02 seconds. Freese also finished third in the 100 back in a Bucknell third-best all-time 57.48 seconds, .30 behind teammate Lectie Altman and .42 behind winner Throckmorton.
Freese was also a member of three second-place Bucknell relay teams this weekend. The 200-yard freestyle relay team finished second in a Bucknell second-best all-time 1:35.32, just .39 seconds behind Navy's top squad. The 200 medley relay team also took second place in a Bucknell second-best all-time 1:45.06, .09 seconds behind the Mids' team once again. In the 400 free relay, Freese's foursome finished in a Bucknell second-best all-time 3:30.80, 2.05 seconds behind the Mids.
The team recorded 715 points at the Patriot League Championship this weekend, well ahead of second-place Navy's take of 521 ?. Freese single-handedly won 56 points, earning 20 points with her two wins and 16 points with her bronze-medal finish. That was the third-highest total behind Navy's Aubra Thomas (60) and Throckmorton (57).
