Bison Women's Water Polo Breaks Even at Bucknell Invitational, Falls to Hartwick

LEWISBURG, Pa. - After a thrilling 10-9 overtime victory over Harvard last night, the Bucknell women's water polo team could not duplicate the feat against No. 18 Hartwick, falling 9-3. Hartwick's lead grew as large as 8-1 after scoring the first two goals of the game before the Bison outscored Hartwick 2-1 in the final frame.
Hartwick went ahead 2-0 on goals from Sheri Johnson and Keri James before Meg Blitzer's score with 2:33 left in the period halved Hartwick's lead. Blitzer would also finish the contest with a game-high three steals. But the visitors scored five unanswered goals in the second period to build a lead Bucknell would not threaten. Hartwick's Kate Chambers had the first two of the second period, followed by James' second, one from Colleen Santos, and Johnson's second before Bucknell went into the break down 7-1.
Hartwick's Shelby Slay had the only goal of the third period, giving the Hawks their largest lead, 8-1. Christina Behrens scored on a penalty shot with 5:53 left in the game for Bucknell's second goal, and after Hartwick's last goal from Vanessa Malik, Megan Purdy cemented the final score with 2:01 left in the game.
Bucknell's Mandy Bynum had seven saves, with five coming in the second half. Hartwick's Amy Brunton also had seven, with all coming in the first three periods.
The loss drops Bucknell's record to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the Bucknell Invitational, while Hartwick improves to 9-6 and an undefeated 4-0 at the Bucknell Invitational.
