HAMILTON, N.Y. - Freshman Lindsey Hollobaugh had her fourth-straight 20-point game, but it was not enough as the Bucknell women's basketball team dropped its final regular-season game of the year at Colgate, falling to the Raiders 75-66 on Sunday, February 29, 2004. The game clinched the regular-season conference title for Colgate, and gave BU the fifth seed in the upcoming league tournament.
Hollobaugh took the opening tip all the way to the hoop for a three-point play in the game's first four seconds. Bucknell proceeded to open up a 10-2 lead on a Brooke Tomovich jumper with 15:00 to play before Milaina Lagzdins converted Colgate's first field goal of the game to make it 10-4.
Lagzdins' jumper started a 5-0 run to get the squad within three, but senior Desire Almind stopped the run with her first points of the game at 12:41. The Orange and Blue pushed the lead to as many as seven three times in the next four minutes, before a Hollobaugh layup gave the team its largest lead of the half, 26-18.
Colgate, however, went on to score 16 of the final 20 points of the frame to carry a 34-30 lead into the locker room.
Almind finished the first twenty with seven rebounds, the first coming just 32 seconds into the game and giving the co-captain the Patriot League single-season record for caroms. Hollobaugh ended the frame with 17 points, going 7-of-14 from the floor and 3-of-3 from the foul line.
Bucknell was within one early in the second after Almind hit the front end of a pair of free throws to cut it to 36-35, and a Tomovich layup less than four minutes later tied the game for the first time since the waning minutes of the opening half. The Raiders again put together a 6-0 spurt to open up a 50-44 lead, and after a Lindsey Geosits jumper made it 50-46 with 12:16 to play, Colgate went on to outscore the Bison 11-4, including six straight to build an 11-point advantage.
The host team would go ahead by as many as 13 on two occasions, before one last burst from BU made it a 69-64 contest with 2:17 to go. The Bison got two points each from five different players during a 10-2 run. Bucknell would only score two more the rest of the way, though, and the Raiders went 4-of-5 from the foul line in the final 1:22 of the game to come away with the win.
The Orange and Blue shot 50.0% from the field in the second half to finish the game with a 41.5% clip for the game (27-65), but it wasn't enough to overcome the Raiders sizzling 54.5% in the second and 49.2% (30-61) in the contest.
Colgate held a slight rebounding edge, 40-35, led by a career-high 13 from Leandra Fuller. Almind led the Bison with her 17th double-double of the year, finishing with 17 points and 10 rebounds to end the regular-season with 354 rebounds, passing Amy O'Brien of Holy Cross (344 in 1997-98).
Hollobaugh led all scorers with 27 points, while also collecting eight rebounds and handing out four assists.
Bucknell enters the Patriot League tournament with a 14-13 overall record, and completes Patriot League play at 7-7. The Orange and Blue will draw fourth-seeded Holy Cross in the quarterfinal round at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, March 5, a team BU defeated in its last meeting and split with during the regular-season. Colgate clinched the top-seed at 18-9 overall and 10-4 in the conference. The Raiders will face Lafayette (1-26, 1-13 PL) in the first round.
