LEWISBURG, Pa. - Despite ending the first period holding a slim 2-1 margin, the Bucknell women's water polo team fell to the Princeton Tigers, 11-6, in the Bison's first game at the Bucknell Invitational. Bucknell's Meg Blitzer had four of Bucknell's six goals, but equaled in scoring by two Princeton players, Jazmin Brown and Elyse Colgan.
After one of Brown's goals opened the scoring just 16 seconds into the game, Bucknell's co-captains Blitzer and Kelly Hofstetter each had a goal to give Bucknell a 2-1 advantage, its only lead of the game. Princeton scored three goals in a two-minute span in the second period, including two by Colgan, to go up 4-2. Following a goal by Bucknell's Cody Keffer to cut the lead to one with just over two minutes to go in the half, Princeton had a 4-1 run bridging the break to go up 8-4. Brown had two goals in that stretch, a span interrupted and ended by goals from Bucknell's Blitzer to put Bucknell back within three.
But another Princeton run ended any hope of a Bucknell comeback, as the Tigers scored three goals in less than two-and-a-half minutes in the final period, giving them an 11-5 edge. Blitzer's fourth goal made the final 11-6.
Bucknell will play again at 4:05 p.m. against Salem International, a team that received a 17-1 drubbing at the hands of Michigan State earlier this morning at Kinney Natatorium. Bucknell's record fell to 2-2 with the loss, while Princeton improves to 5-1.
