Bison Women's Tennis Sweeps St. Bonaventure to Open Spring Duals

OLEAN, N.Y. - The last bit of Bucknell women's tennis history that will be rewritten this season, at least until senior Samantha Berthod plays her final singles match for the Bison, was etched today as junior Tanya Sichko claimed her 42nd doubles win all-time in a 7-0 win at St. Bonaventure. Sichko now owns the total wins mark with 95 between singles and doubles, as well as the doubles mark. Berthod won her 54th career singles match today, extending her record and keeping a one-match margin over Sichko's 53.
Sichko's doubles win came with teammate Veronica Brown over the Bonnies' Natalie Rumpel and Lindsey Marsh, 8-2. It broke a three-way tie with Kristina Lutter '94 and Kim Regester '85 at 41 wins. The Bison also claimed second and third doubles, with Berthod and Rheanna Gaskin beating Jasmine Jaysingh and Morgan Marsh, 8-2, and Nadezda Curcic and Chelsea Mills sweeping Stephanie Fosnight and Katie Tkacik, 8-0.
Brown went two-for-two over Rumpel on the day, defeating her at number one singles, 6-4, 6-1. Gaskin took second singles over Fosnight, 7-6(5), 6-2, and Curcic beat Lindsey Marsh at third singles, 6-1, 6-4. On the back three courts, Sichko beat Jaysingh, 6-3, 6-1, while Berthod beat Morgan Marsh, 6-4, 6-0, and Mills swept Tkacik, 6-0, 6-0.
The win is Bucknell's fourth dual victory of the 2003-04 season, combined with three this fall. The Bison will be off the courts for three weeks before their Spring Break trip to Orlando, Fla. The first match in the Sunshine State will be on Mar. 14 versus Fairfield.
