Maria Garcia Named Patriot League Women's Field Athlete of the Week

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior thrower Maria Garcia (Providence, R.I./Hope) broke her own Bucknell record in the 20-lb. weight throw with a toss of 54' ?" at the Bucknell Winter Classic on Saturday and has been honored as the Patriot League's Women's Field Athlete of the Week for that performance. She broke the record for the first time on Jan. 31 at the Bison Open and Pentathlon with a throw of 53'11 ?".
Garcia came in second in the event, but only to Syracuse's Johnronnie Hernandez, who broke the Gerhard Fieldhouse record with a toss of 61'8 ?".
The award is the fifth for Bucknell's track and field squads this year. Greg Costello earned the award on Feb. 3 for his 5K finish of 14:28.59 at the Penn State National Invitational, the ninth-best finish in Bucknell history. Noel Powell was named men's field athlete of the week on Jan. 27 for his 23'9" long jump win at the Bucknell Octagonal, while Costello's first win on Jan. 13 for a mile victory in 4:19.03 at Bucknell's Gulden Relays was the first on the men's side. On Jan. 20, pole vaulter Melanie Buczko won the women's field award for her 12'5 ?" school-record pole vault which she broke again the following week.
Bucknell's track and field athletes will host the Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend, starting on Friday and continuing through Sunday.
