ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Courtney Davidson scored 16 second-half points for Navy, forging the Midshipmen to a 65-42 victory over Bucknell in college women's basketball action on Saturday, February 14. The win marks the first time in the last 14 meetings the BU has not defeated Navy.
Davidson opened up the game with a three-pointer just a minute into it, and the Midshipmen proceeded to hold the Bison without a field goal for the first 5:12 of the game while building an 8-2 lead. Junior Lillian Drumgold, who scored BU's first six points, got the squad its first field goal of the game and ignited an 8-0 Orange and Blue run that would give the team a 10-8 lead with 12:41 to play.
Kate Maslowski's two free throws 2:26 later tied the contest at 10, and an Adrienne Roseti put back with 8:55 left in the half gave the host team a 12-10 lead. Senior Desire Almind stopped a 4:08 drought for the Bison with her conversion on two foul shots, and added two more points in a 6-0 spurt that gave BU a 16-12 advantage.
Two free throws from junior Brooke Tomovich put Bucknell ahead 18-17, but that was the last time the Orange and Blue would lead in the contest. Navy outscored the Bison 11-3 over the final 5:08 of the half to enter the locker room leading BU 28-21.
The Bison struggled from the field in the frame, making just six field goals on 30 attempts for a .200 accuracy.
Navy continued its run into the second half, opening the frame with the first five points. Davidson hit three consecutive three-pointers for the Mids, and scored 11 of the teams first 13 points of the second twenty while leading her team to a 16-point lead with 14:28 to play.
Bucknell's first four points of the second half were Tomovich free throws, and the squad did not convert a field goal until an Almind jumper with 12:21 left made it a 19-point game, 46-27. Another jumper from Almind 1:34 later got BU within 17, but that was as close as the team would get the rest of the way.
Navy built its lead to as many 30 (60-30) with 7:07 left to play, Bucknell's largest deficit of the season. The Orange and Blue made just 4-of-23 second half shots (.174), and converted on just .650 (13-of-20) of its chances at the line while being held to the season-low 42 points and .189 field goal percentage. In fact, the 42 points scored was the lowest by a Bucknell squad since losing a 51-41 decision at Navy on January 21, 1998.
The Midshipmen did not fare much better, shooting just .377 for the game, but the host team outscored the Bison 37-21 in the second half for the convincing win.
Almind led Bucknell with 12 points, while Drumgold was the only other Bison in double-figures with 11. Davidson led all scorers with 23 points.
Bucknell falls to 11-12 overall and 4-6 in the Patriot League. BU returns home for its final two home games of the year against Lafayette and Colgate on February 20 and 22. Navy improves to 11-14 overall and 4-6 in the conference standings.
